Response to the referendum result

Today's result is a devastating one for all who believe that the UK is stronger as part of the European family.

Already today we have seen some of the Remain campaign's serious predictions in the event of Brexit happening: financial markets plummet, companies looking to move jobs away from the UK.
Other European nations have outlined intentions to hold their own in/out referendums and Scotland and Northern Ireland have indicated their desires to leave the UK in order to remain in Europe.
In Westminster our Prime Minister has resigned, a vote of no confidence has been declared against the Leader of the Opposition and Leave campaign promises of new cash for the NHS have already been gone back on.

It is clear our nation's young people voted strongly to remain. Their strong ambition for their future has been taken from them. I've already heard from teens and younger that they are concerned for their future and that of their European friends here in the UK.

Here in Guildford the result was not as close as the national one. 56% of voters wanted to remain. This is testament to the internationally-minded nature of our community. It couldn't change the overall result but Guildford Liberal Democrats hope it will show those who live and work in our community who are from overseas that they remain welcome here.

Nationally and locally the Liberal Democrats will continue to stand and fight for a better kind of Britain than the one painted by the Leave campaign - tolerant, openhearted, optimistic, and outward looking.
