Guildford Liberal Democrats have welcomed news that economic growth in the UK is strong, supporting people and jobs across the borough. An independent report, published on 24 February, 2015 by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), has found that from 2013 to 2014, UK growth delivered the strongest performance amongst the G7 countries.
Angel Gurria, General Secretary of the OECD, concluded that "Britain has a long-term economic plan, but it needs to stick with it."
Welcoming the OECD's report, Liberal Democrat Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander says "The best way to secure the recovery in the next Parliament is to finish the job of deficit reduction and to do so fairly by selective tax increases on the wealthy.  We are committed to offering the same balanced approach, endorsed by the OECD’s recent report, in the next Parliament as we have in this one.”
"This report confirms that the UK economy is returning to health and highlights the vital role of key Liberal Democrat policies in that turnaround. Liberal Democrat thinking has been central to the economic improvements - dramatic increases in the personal allowance, the greening of the economy, the focus on infrastructure, and putting the financial sector back on an even keel are just a few examples where our even approach has reaped economic rewards.”
“This is in stark contrast to the Conservatives who are abandoning fairness and the centre ground. By urging years of cuts for cuts’ sake, by unfairly finishing the job of balancing the books on the backs of the least well off, and undermining our position in Europe, they will put this hard-won recovery at risk.  With the country on the right track, a lurch to the right with the Tories or to the left with Labour has never posed a greater danger to our economic recovery."
Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate Kelly-Marie Blundell says "Thanks to the Liberal Democrats in Government, people are keeping more money in their pockets due to the raising of the minimum tax threshold.  In Guildford this has benefited thousands of people, helping to boost the economy and support local businesses.”
“As we look towards a new government, we must balance cuts with investment in cracking down on tax avoidance and boosting the economy further, to continue to generate growth and work towards a stronger economy and a fairer society".
